Prof. Jinsang Kim’s lab at the University of Michigan has discovered a material with a secret trick, a so called super-cooled liquid. These materials get very thick like maple syrup when cooled down from melting, it’s like they are just waiting for something to push them over into being a solid. Watch what happens when you do just that: first, the researchers initiate the process simply with a nudge! Next, they start the crystallization process using pre-formed crystals as a seed. The more you know: this is the same sort of nucleation and growth effect that allowed people all over the East Coast to instantaneously freeze water bottles during last years’ frigid winter.
