Despite decades of research, there is still uncertainty about the biological mechanism that triggers cancer. There are several rival hypotheses, and genuine progress in cancer research will depend on determining the correct one. In this presentation, Drs. Soto and Sonnenschein explain the major cancer theories and how the differences impact research.

Guests:
Ana Soto, M.D. , Professor, Tufts University School of Medicine
and Carlos Sonnenschein, M.D., Tufts University School of Medicine

Both Dr. Soto and Dr. Sonnenschein received their M.D. degrees from the National University of Buenos Aires in Argentina. Both joined the Tufts University School of Medicine and have been trail-blazers from the very start of their research partnership at Tufts. They are internationally recognized for their work on the relationship between endocrine disruptors and cancer, and the effect of endocrine disruptors on sexual development.

They have acquired numerous awards for their research, including the 2012 Gabbay Award (shared with Patricia Hunt) for their path-breaking work on the endocrine disruptor, BPA, and (Dr. Soto) the appointment as the Blaise Pascal Research Chair in Biology by the École Normale Supérieure, a prestigious French institution of higher education.
