A spore like a sperm or egg contains half a set of chromosomes. Like a seed, under optimal conditions spores germinate and a thread, like a root, emerges. When two threads from different spores produced by different hyphae intersect and touch, genetic material is exchanged. The genetically complete threads become hyphae and begin to grow and produce fruit called mushrooms containing spores. The mushrooms usually grow from the periphery of the hyphae producing a ring of mushrooms.
