This video explains The solid state. Matter exist in three states namely solids, liquids and gases which are interconvertable by changing temperature and pressure. The difference between these is explained in terms of kinetic molecular theory of matter. In solids atoms or ions or molecules are orderly arranged in three dimensions due to strong binding force as a result they have rigid and definite geometrical spaces. In liquids the movement of ions or atoms or molecules is limited due to cohesive force. In gases atoms or ions or molecules are randomly arranged due to weak Vander Waals forces. Solids are two types:
(i) Crystalline solids - where the component units are arranged in definite geometrical order.
(ii) Amorphous solids - where the component units are not regularly arranged.
- Slowly cooling the melt (annealing) gives rise to crystalline solids.
- Rapid cooling the melt (queuing) gives rise to amorphous solids.
