Gram equivalent weight:Equivalent weight of a substance is the weight of substance which combines with 1 gram of Hydrogen (or) 8gram of oxygen (or) 35.5gram of chlorine. It can be calculated with the following formula.
For acids:Valency is the number of replaceable or replaced hydrogen'sH^+xample: equivalent weight of H_2 〖SO〗_4 = 98/2 = 49

In the reaction: NaOH + H_2 〖SO〗_4 NaH〖SO〗_4 + H_2 0
Equivalent weight of H_2 〖SO〗_4in above reaction = 98/1 = 98
For Base:Valency of the base is the number of replaceable or replaced 'OH' groups
Equivalent weight of NaOH= 40/1 = 40
For Salt :-Valency of salt is the number of positive/negative charges.
